Villa Clara Geography

Province located in the central region of Cuba. It limits to the north with the Atlantic Ocean, to the east with Sancti Spiritus, to the south with Cienfuegos, and to the west with Matanzas.
It has an extension of 8 309,6 sq km (3208 sq mi) and an estimated population of 824 825 inhabitants (1996) divided in thirteen municipalities. The province ranks fifth in extension and fourth in population. Its capital is the city of Santa Clara.


Its relief is characterized by the presence of Cuba’s central northern heights, the Manacas plain, and the heights of Santa Clara. The maximum height is 473 m (1551 ft). The hydrography of the province is represented by rivers like Sagua la Grande, Sagua la Chica, and the Alacranes dam.
Bovine and porcine cattle is raised and industry is represented by electronic, chemical, electro-technical, leather, and non-electric machinery production, as well as fishing.
