The US has a way to shut down Wikileaks, the infamous SDN list

Could the SDN list be the best censorship tool for websites?

You may not know what the SDN list (Specially Designated Nationals) is but we´ll explain. It’s the US version of Iran and Chinas state censorship machine. Initially created with good intent to inform the world (and US entities, persons) of Terrorists, Rogue regimes and other wrongdoers. It slowly converted into a censorship list to block free speech on the Internet. You see, by adding a website to the list the U.S authorities could then evoke a closure order on the registrar where the domain is registered. Of course, if it’s a .com or .org then the US can evoke the said closure order anywhere in the world via ICANN. So while the US is feverishly trying to find a way to censor WIKILEAKS then maybe they should allege that Julian Assange works for say Cuba or Iran? No burden proof is required, just the need to “allege”. However crazy it may seem to free speech supporting Americans, there´s no congressional hearing, judge or Supreme Court needed here. Simply get OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) to fabricate the claim, type the name into the list and Voila! Another US Censored website.

In 2006 the US censored a series of Cuba websites. Some with benign propaganda about the deceased American writer Ernest Hemingway www.Cuba-Hemingway.com while others preyed into the apparently dark and mysterious www.CubanCulture.com . The latter may have been added to the list because of the brief article on the locally active black magic and covert babalawos?

Shutting down the websites then became easy work. A quick call from a Government office to the US based Enom and ICANN and the sites were “disappeared” from worldwide viewing. Gone…Two years and counting

When, in 2008, the British owner of the domains claimed foul play, the US offered a consoling response “the owner can appeal to be removed from the list”. An appeal was immediately lodged but the US Gov is, for once in recent history, silent until this present day.

Not even Hillary Clinton could remember that the US has over 60 websites on the censorship list during her speech on January the 21st 2010 when she deplored Iran and China for shutting down websites.

This brings us back to Julian Assange and his current skirmish with the US over the WIKILEAKS website. The easiest way to shut down Wikileaks would obviously be to add the site to the SDN list as the US Judicial system is not required for it to do its trick of censorship. Surely a Photoshop specialist in Langley could easily manage a quick image of Ahmadinejad or Raul Castro with Julian to appease free speech activists? Maybe Julian has, at sometime in the past, taken vacation to Cuba which would certainly be the damning proof required to claim he was in cohorts with the Cuban Military, no? In the case of the domains censored in 2006, all that was needed was that the US governments “claim” that the domains were owned by the Cuban government. Obviously, nobody in the State Department knew how to do a whois search at the time. Even today, the domain names show the same owner as in 2006, the Cuban Government being conspicuously absent then and now from ICANN official records.

If Wikileaks could be taken offline for over three years as the numerous websites added to the SDN list have, then the US problem would invariably “go away”,  almost over night. Julian could then appeal and get one of these letters, then hear nothing, all the while his website is shutdown.

Good luck Julian! Censorship is not as hard to escape as you think, even in the land of free speech…

Websites on the SDN list

It’s actually not such a big issue in Wikileaks case, having tech knowledge to switch to other ways of information sharing, P2P for example.

  2. ms Says:

I’m interested to see these cuban websites that are shut down. I don’t get it. There are plenty of “propaganda” sites I can see in the US. To hide cuban sites makes little sense to me.

I want to see the list of what I’m not seeing in the US. thanks for sharing this. Didn’t even realize what I’m missing. Just like Chinese, Koreans and other countries don’t know what they’re missing.

Thankfully wikileaks has had the exposure it has, so the govt realizes we won’t have censorship of that site.

  3. gabe morrow Says:

even if they shutdown wikileaks like this i doubt they would

wikileaks is far to well known now that using this stratagy to silence them would be impossible they would risk to big an outrage (the 2 websites you mention vary few have herd of have you even seen them mention anywhere in us news unlike wikileaks)

plus you just need to enter the ip address of what ever website it is you want no need to us icann

    http://88.80.17.18/

and should the ip change just use twitter from wikileaks main account or some other means to let ppl know of its location

  4. Bard Says:

This would take it offline for the majority, but not for all, if it’s only killing it at the DNS level.

Maybe it’s time for wikileaks to setup an alternative ‘rogue nation’ proof DNS service.

  5. hn Says:

But the SDN list only covers domains. So: wikileaks would still be available via their IP address and all those alternative domains they, or their supporters registered.

Not really a problem, and far easier to solve than China’s censorship…

  6. Donna Glass Says:

Wikileaks and Julian Assange are doing a great serviece
for Americans. Tyranny is not to be accepted by Americans. I support Julian Assange and Wikileaks.

  8. Julian Assange Says:

We understand this to mean that the USG does not want to shut down Wikileaks, perhaps for our value in seducing the unwary to send us leaks. We note that mirrors of the two alleged CU-related sites appeared as soon as they were axed. Wikileaks will also appear in other guises if it is censored. We are ready for that with the dozens of real and spoof Wikileaks sites around the world supported by thousands of volunteers, some not entirely loyal. We stand with Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Israel, Belgium and Iceland. We regret the loss of Sweden’s once promising sanctuary to a snarling coven of witches.

  9. CertainQuirk Says:

Thanks for this. America is a real disappointment of Justice and Freedom these days. Luckily, WikiLeaks is diverse and popular enough that they will be able to provide workaround links until public outrage reversed the censorship.

  10. Eric Says:

The problem with the censorship list idea is, WikiLeaks, or indeed The Pirate Bay or anyone else who might conceivably be targeted for censure, can simply rename itself and occupy a different domain name. Meanwhile, this anti-freedom of speech measure would get increasing coverage and public outrage.

  11. The Mad Ape Says:

they can do that sure…but then they have to suffer the consequences of their actions.

how would 100? 1000? 10,000? wikileaks clones do for starters?

the funny thing about truth and honesty - it is impossible to suppress and the suppressors expose themselves for the scum that they really are.

“the truth will set you free”, as cliche as it is, is oh so true…even more-so today!

  12. Bruce M. Says:

I find it disturbing that the U.S. Gov’t. can use it’s power to conceal it’s wrongdoings, by convincing the public at large that the founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, is corrupt; in THIS case he is charged with/accused of some sexual crime. I found the timing of this to be highly suspicious, showing me that the Gov’t. is afraid of being exposed to something. This is the typical “smear campaign” government ploy used in administrative investigations and the courts trying to prove that their credibility outweighs yours. They’ll even fabricate issues to convince (mislead) others that their actions are justified. That’s how corrupt it truly is here.

I would also suspect that this chicken shit gov’t. is monitoring any/all posts, comments, etc.. GOOD…let them! I WANT them to see how individuals, such as myself, are standing up to their bullshit and we’re sick and tired of the “Business as Usual”/”What’s in it for Me” mentality.

All I can say is keep on doing what you are doing.
People who violate law or commit human atrocities MUST be held accountable. Wikileaks will do JUST THAT, unlike the pussified ameriKKKan media!

If you were established in 2002-03, we wouldn’t be in this mess we are in today when stupid bush started a war, which I may add was NOT a bona fide “Declaration” passed by our Congress. This is a “Checks and Balances” issue here and it involves the American publics’ say, which as evidence proves, was NOT done.

Frankly, I DO NOT believe that the ‘terrists’(bushism) just decided to fly planes into buildings one September morning…something or someone provoked them.
In particular the US and Israel had something to do with it (911). Specifically, US/Israel not attending ‘Peace Talks’ with the Palestinians in Saudi Arabia a few months earlier is the key; in short, DEFIANCE?! Israel can do what ever they want to the Palestinian population, because the jews are ‘gods’ people. The US looks the other way when they do so.
This has been a problem for MANY years and I believe was “the straw that broke the camels back”. (no pun intended).
Israel vs Palestinians is the KEY reason why we have terrorism.
Do you remember when Israel kidnapped (held against his will) Yasser Arafat in his own compound and the US did nothing to stop it?
Do you remember when Israel attacked Syria during the bush era, and the US looked the other way?

There is no more kidnapping of personnel by terrorists. The rules of the game have clearly changed. They will become more sophisticated in their attacks from here on in. 911 was a success for them and they see how vulnerable the US really is, despite all the tough talk and Homeland Security mumbo jumbo and their stupid color coded charts.

Anyway, the bush administration covered it all up, and got away with committing ‘War Crimes’! Pursue this and Wikileaks will prevail!

This is why the US gov’t does NOT want Wikileaks in existence!
They want to give their side of the story for committing atrocities, so that the American ‘Sheeple’ can sleep at night knowing that they are protected from ‘terrists’.
Although, the duct tape, plastic and the color coded charts did help! lol

This is the exact reason why this stupid country must stop acting like it’s the world police department! It is NOT good at it.

In regard to Whistleblowing; I believe that this explains the ‘Act’ in a nutshell for those not familiar with its language….
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblower

I myself was a Whistleblower in 2003. I reported a Gov’t agency (DVA) for it’s “Gross Waste of funds, Gross Mismanagement, and Abuse of Authority.” These are the ‘Prongs’ required to establish a Whistleblower claim (at least in 2003 when I filed).
Yet, with the “Fox guarding the Henhouse”, I had no chance of prevailing in my claim, even though it was valid. Lies were told and paperwork was fabricated by gov’t officials. This is a perfect example of corruption!
Oversight with an agency ‘watching’ another agency is a fucking joke and is nothing but a smoke screen, a deterrent of sorts, to prevent violations in law. Even still, Judges in this country are politically motivated to rule against any such claim(s), unless you have CASH.
The Whistleblower claim must be extremely egregious enough to warrant a thorough investigation or prevail.
Little violations aren’t given the time of day even if laws were broken. This shows me that “Lady Libertys’” weight scales are off kilt, when egregious claims are investigated and the minor ones are ignored. What does this say about the US Judicial System?!…It is for the wealthy that can afford to get off or in the least, plea bargain.

In conclusion, DO NOT stop at what you are doing.
Remember, at THIS stage of the game “Anything you say will be used against you in a court of law”!
I would counter sue the US gov’t. for Defamation, Slander and Libel (if written) and for violating YOUR basic human right to free speech to disclose atrocities committed by gov’t. officials in the scope of their employment/term.

If you do appeal, chances are that it’ll be shot down when some conservative prick judge, hand picked by the administration, who will find some bogus law or create one to condemn your organization.
Either way, even though Wikileaks may be forced to cease and desist this will show the world that the US has committed a crime or atrocity that they don’t want exposed and they will continue to commit these atrocities if organizations like WikiLeaks is closed down. (eg: Bush, et al)

Isn’t all of this showing an “Abuse of (Government) Authority” though, when you “…can’t say this or print that”? Isn’t this action also supporting what America is against?…Gov’t. controlled media, aka: “Communism”?

I believe that if you made a case with the court in the Hague regarding Bushs’ War crimes, then you have a valid argument when the US Gov’t. ‘Covers it up’. This is known as Deliberate Concealment when they refuse to disclose OR when they lie about the reasons for invading Iraq and the US refusing to cooperate will be considered as an Obstruction of Justice against criminals who are responsible for the loss of life, destruction, the hardships caused and the Global economic conditions that we are witnessing today.
The US is on the brink of financial failure due to the atrocities committed by the bush administration, thus effecting world commerce.

IF you can prove that bush, et al committed War Crimes, your credibility would skyrocket across the globe and the US credibility would end up in the toilet. “Uncle Sam” needs a good slap across the face, because this slap will wake up the voters who elect these nimrods into power!

The US is contradicting itself with the “Free Speech” BS, and it shows that the US media has NO BALLS to confront Gov’t officials when there are questions of integrity. Maybe this “Slap” will wake them up to.

I believe that WIKILEAKS could be the key to World Peace that we keep hearing about and thriving for.
Americas’ mentality using “Peace through superior Firepower” is just not cutting it anymore. Look at the loss of life, the hardships, the destruction caused and the economic mess on OUR Planet because of this crap.

I STRONGLY believe that Wikileaks is doing something good here and if the US Gov’t had nothing to hide, than there shouldn’t be a problem. Their attempts to close you down though, should be raising some pretty interesting questions.

The Free Speech loving US also has those National Security Letters.’

I saw that show too. The story about the US librarians fighting back and winning is inspiring. Given the information wikileaks has released to the global press, I am convinced the information should be hosted in every public library in every country that has libraries.

Without the truth we have no hope of ensuring we live in free democracies.

These government officials forget they are employed by us. They are paid by us and as such it is high time they demonstrated real respect to their employers, not lip service glossed over with spin and untruths.

12/29/2010 ~ The attempted repression of WikiLeaks and the vain efforts to silence Brother Julien Assange was doomed to utter failure from the start and has had the opposite effect. Now people worldwide are more aware of the sneaky, vicious and fascist nature of the enemies of the people, esp. the rogue Obama Regime. We have to see deeply and distinguish the puppets from the master puppeteers. It is a truism that repression breeds resistance.

The whole situation has been elevated. Many millions of people see the positive benefits of WikiLeaks in terms of waking people up to the evils that can happen when fascism is allowed to become more and more powerful. Much is to be said, but for now just let me type the Freedom of Creative Expression is a humane right bestowed upon by Creator!

If wikileaks didn’t have any webpages left they’d have to just have to have all their leaked documents published instead? Flood the market.
